On 24 February 2024, we participated in Ronald McDonald House’s annual fundraising event, Up all Night. Walking a 42km marathon during the night was to raise fund for families who stay at RMHCWA’s accommodation facility while their kids’ treatment is underway.
The marathon happens at night to give participants some insight into what parents face when their children are seriously ill.
So what was it like, “walking a night in their shoes”?
I can say that the parents who are staying at RMHCWA and the staff who care for them are incredible examples of going higher. A marathon with all the great support, camaraderie, conversation, food stops, and sightings of Gus the beautiful therapy dog, was easy in comparison to what they must face every day and night.
Together we walked the long road, knowing that the purpose meant more than the sore feet. When one of us flagged, there was support. And the sense of joy and achievement at the finish line made sleep afterwards impossible. The buzz overrode the fatigue, until it really was time to rest.
When you’re imbued with a purpose bigger than you, with like minded community full of generous spirit, then these challenges are not only possible, they’re enriching in ways that are deep and beautiful. That’s going higher. Hope to see you one night, walking in their shoes.
